2.1. The 5136-SD Card

The 5136-SD card provides the interface between a communication network and a host computer. The card uses a Z180 microprocessor to implement the low-level communication functions. The card occupies 32K or 16K bytes of memory in the host memory space. This window contains all the tables and buffers that are used to pass information between the interface card and the application software running in the host computer, using a shared memory interface. There is no ROM on the card; the appropriate interface software is downloaded to the card by the host, making it possible to communicate using different protocols by simply downloading another module to the SD card. Note that the SD card may use only one protocol at a time.
